DW__What's your name and where do you live? what's your job?
I'm Marian Kihogo, I'm a celebrity personal stylist and creative consultant. I'm based in London.
DW__When did you started blogging, how did you come up with the idea?
I started my blog in December 2009. It came about from needing to give my unadulterated perspective on things inspiring me. I was styling, consulting and editing and in each of these roles, all I did was to suit the brand, product and client in question. The blog became an outlet where I could speak and comment to suit myself.
DW__You are a celebrity personal stylist, a digital editor and creative consultant, you have an inspiring blog which talks about a lot of things... How do you find the time to do all that?!
I tend to blog on the go. Some posts happen instinctively and some simmer over time. Either way, most posts are informed by my work, what I'm spotting along the way and so on. Due to that I find its easy to squeeze in posts as they are generated as I go on. The best blog posts are those that just happen from instinct. They then take little time to put together as I write them as and when inspiration hits.
DW__Could you introduce it (your blog)?
Mariankihogo.com is really just a fashion, beauty and culture weblog with sections on fashion & trends, beauty, music, film, events etc. My real aim for the site is to encourage enthusiasm and provoke thought and conversation.
DW__What is fashion for you?
A depiction of our times. Fashion usually is informed by what is going on historically, culturally and politically. To me it is an indicator of where a people are and where they are headed next.
DW__According to you, what is the most significant period for women's fashion?
Perhaps the 1920's. We see a playfulness and a relaxed mood enter women's fashion for the first time. The mood reflected the times; adventure, financial boom etc. Everything from the drop waists, the spirit of the flappers, the new forays in hair etc to me made way for other significant fashion eras like the 60's and 70's.
DW__What do you think about the influence of fashion bloggers in the fashion world?
I think it is interesting and a reflection of the power of digital. I think conversation and open dialogue is always a good thing and a good blog is just that, a platform for dialogue. Do you believe that one day they'll replace the fashion magazine or do you think it's just ephemeral ? I don't think magazines will ever be replaced. They will take on new form to suit the ever changing times but I think blogs add dynamism. They complement each other and facilitate each other.
DW__Your indispensable items ?
My wristwear and rings! They are like my armor against the world.
DW__Your style is AMAZING ! Where do you get your ideas from?
Thank you! My style is an emotive experience. Whatever I'm wearing at any given time is a reflection of a headspace or mood. My style is also shaped by the places I've seen, my life experience and a love for proportion play, layering, menswear tailoring texture and eras such as the 70's.
DW__What is your greatest inspiration?
The fearlessness of my Mother to simply be irrespective of the opinions and pre conceived notions of others.
DW__How important is it for you to look your best and why?
For me its not about looking my best per say but its more about looking like a reflection of me. So if looking my best is dressing to suit my personality than for me it is essential and incredibly important. If it is defined as just 'looking good' or aesthetically pleasing than I'm not so sure that's too important as a factor when one gets dressed. When one just dresses for the sake of looking good, this can become a tainted process which is then too thought out. The best dressed are those who dress to express their personality.
DW__Who would qualify to be an icon?
Icon is a tricky one these days. Its like the concept of celebrity, its taken a whole new form from say 70 years ago. I think the definition of an icon is different for each person. It is relative.
DW__Your favourites designers?
I'm continually intrigued by the work of the late Cristobal Balenciaga. He was ahead of his time. Nicolas who designs for the house now is genius. Others include Rei Kawakubo, Ana Sekularac, John Rocha, Miuccia Prada, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten etc.
DW__Your ideal female or male would have what style? what would he/she be wearing?
They would be wearing whatever is a reflection of themselves. Their style would an outward manifestation of who they are.
DW__Websites? blogs? other links?
DW__One last/final word?
You owe it to yourself to live. Many of us confuse an existence with a life. Live each moment to the full and you will find that caring about others think of our style, how we wear our hair or those boots that are not on trend ceases to matter. When we truly grasp each moment we are compelled to becomes our very best selves; style wise and in every way.
